Aurora shines as always at History in Toronto.
The show opened to a larger-than-life Aurora introducing her “What Happened to the Heart?” tour on the oversized video backdrop, as she made her entrance. The great thing throughout the show was the use of the visual montage during her set as an extension of herself, her quirks and weirdness, whom legions of her fans, who refer themselves as “warriors and weirdos”, have come to adore about her. That fanbase has never died down but from the look of the crowd tonight it has definitely expanded to all age groups and walks of life.
Aurora opened the show with some quieter tracks, “Churchyard, “Through The Eyes of a Child”and “The River” before heading into “A Soul With No King” off her new album, “What Happened to the Heart?”. In-between tracks she would sometimes she would ramble on random things like squirrels and some heartful things like nature and the state of world, in a very innocent and affable way that she can only do, which her fans seem to eat up as they confess their love for her. Aurora also noted that her band has been touring for a long while now and that she was happy and sad that it was coming to an end. There are just a few more dates left in the US before year end.
There were many highlights during show like the quiet, yet emotional renditions of “The
Conflict of the Mind”, and “Exist for love”, but also her more popular songs that fans have come to love like “Runaway”, “The Seed”, and “Running with the Wolves. After seeing her a few times, what impressed me is how far she has come and how far the band has come in their arrangements. The songs sound fuller, bigger, and more arranged than her previous tours, especially introducing background vocalists, electric guitars and electronic beats. One of the standout tracks from the new album is “Starvation”, which is just sonically, electronically epic live and got the crowd moving. There is no like Aurora, personality wise and musically. If you haven’t seen her, you are missing out.]
