On November 30th 2024, Canadian pop rock Marianas Trench took Toronto by storm as part of their Force of Nature tour at History. Supporting them was alternative indie pop singer LØLØ who performed songs from her debut album “falling for robots and wishing i was one”, along with covers of Green Day’s “Brain Stew” and Icona Pop’s “I Love It”. During her set, she exclaimed how excited she was to perform in her hometown and shouted out her family members and her bank teller in the audience.
Just before Marianas Trench took the stage, a man on stage revved up a lawnmower and opened with AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck”. On stage, the rumbling of a storm emerged from the speakers and the band took the stage. The band started their set with a three song run of "A Normal Life”, "Lightning and Thunder" and “I'm Not Getting Better" from their sixth album “Haven”. Inspired by “The Hero’s Journey” and motifs of thunderstorms for the album, the symphonic orchestration and lights combined for a cinematic experience.
Later in the set, they shifted to playing songs from their previous albums. This was quite hard to cover on my end since I couldn’t stop singing along to all the bangers they kept playing from their Ever After and Masterpiece Theatre eras. As witness to the spectacle of the show, I felt my inner child heal as Josh Ramsay walked a lap through the crowd for “Haven't Had Enough”.
Nearing the end of their set, Ramsay recalled playing at the Cameron House for 25 people way back in the day and thanked the audience for sticking with them all these years. The band concluded the show with their all-time classic track “Stutter” and the theatrical symphonic rock “Haven”.
The combination of Josh Ramsay’s impeccable vocals, the fantastic on stage light displays and the band’s onstage chemistry made this a fantastic show to witness. It was clear that Marianas Trench poured their heart and soul into every performance, making the entire evening feel like a shared celebration of their musical journey. I can't wait to go to another one of their shows again and I am glad that they still got it after all these years.
